Voting

With the election over, it's been amazing to hear all the different stories of voters. One of these that has made the news was my sister-in-law and her family. She was pregnant with their 7th and due later on this month. Well, their baby boy Daniel Charles decided to come into this world just before 3 am on Tuesday. They went to the hospital, which happened to be in a different state. So she tried to get an absentee ballot, but they wouldn't give one to her. In the state where the hospital was, they could give emergency absentee ballots for those hospitalized, but since she wasn't a resident of that state, they couldn't do it for her. She didn't give up though, because she knew how important it was to vote. She called the U.S. Secretary of State, and they said if Jefferson county commissioners agreed, she could get an absentee ballot. They approved, and sent two election workers (One democrat, and one republican) to bring her a ballot. They said they didn't know of any other time an election worker had left the state to deliver a ballot. So she got to vote. If you want to read the whole story, check it out here, or watch a video here.

Another thing that I found crazy was the amount of people not educated in their vote. My husband was telling me about a clip from Howard Stern where someone went into Harlem to ask who they were voting for. When they said Obama, he asked "Why? Is it because he is pro-life, or because he wants us to stay in Iraq and finish the war." Everyone said they agreed with those policies from Obama. But wait, those were from McCain. Oh, but it gets even better. So then he asked them if they thought Obama made a good choice choosing Sarah Palin as a VP. They all said, "Yes, she was a good choice for his running mate." It wasn't just those voting for Obama though. They found one person voting for McCain, and when asked why, he said he was very for McCain's policy of ending the war in Iraq right away. Then asked if Joe Biden was a good running mate for McCain, the guy agreed and said yes, that was a great choice.

Now I don't care who you voted for. Just please make sure in the next election you know WHAT you are voting for. Don't just vote for a party, or a person's race or sex. Please vote for what that person represents. Know what their policies are, and vote that way. It amazes me that some people take the privilege to vote for granted.

Congrats to your sister on a new baby boy and the ability to cast a vote that day.
